BBPW January Newsletter
January 14, 2019
Happy New Year! With two weeks in, I hope each of you has started out the new year on a positive note. A new year can always be so energizing, with a look back at the year just past and a look forward to new ways of learning and growing.
We were just thrilled with Sally Helgesen’s presentation on “How Women Rise” at the Morgan House in Lee. It was a sold-out evening with a long waiting list. We had great feedback following the meeting as well. So, I would encourage you to RSVP early for our upcoming dinner meetings!
Our next dinner meeting will be held on February 3rd. Our guest speaker will be
Kara Mikulich, Chief Philanthropy Officer at the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.
The meeting will be held at Mazzeo’s Ristorante,1015 South Street, Pittsfield, MA. Networking takes place at 5:30pm followed by dinner at 6pm. Cost is $35 for Members and $40 for Guests.
Throughout history, the central role of women in society has ensured the stability, progress and long-term development of nations and the need for women to help advance the Berkshires is no different. A recent community assessment published by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation identified key trends and needs in the Berkshires region: jobs and the economy, demographic transition, youth and the future workforce, deepening inequality, and assets and infrastructure. Results from the project’s resident survey include:
- 60% of all residents reported challenges accessing job opportunities for themselves or a family member
- 1 in 5 reported challenges with transportation to work or school
- 1 in 8 reported challenges securing fresh and healthy food
- 44% of residents under age 46 answered “yes” or “maybe” when asked if they are considering moving in the next three years
Women’s voices, experiences and participation in all aspects of society are more important than ever. This month we hope you will join us as we learn about the challenges our community faces and hear about some innovative ways you can be a part of moving our region forward.

Additionally, our board had a retreat on Saturday the 11th at the Hilton Garden Inn. We had a highly productive morning, facilitated by Karen O’Donnell. We have accomplished much, with much more great things on the horizon for this coming year!
If you are interested in helping through work on a committee, please don’t hesitate to contact a board member or me. The Woman of Achievement Committee is looking for members. I too, am seeking a member to be the President-elect to take my role after my term. The opportunity to learn about the organization before becoming the leader is a wonderful one. The organization can do so much to help women rise in this community!
